Mr. Barrus worked with his father, grandfather and uncles building houses in Salt Lake City, Utah. His first job, at age 9, was pulling nails out of boards and stacking the boards for reuse. By the time he reached high school he had experience in all phases of construction.
After graduation from High School in 1951 he worked for the U. S. Bureau of Mines for two years where he prepared ore samples for assay.
In 1953 he took a four year leave of absence from the Bureau of Mines to join the U. S. Air Force. While in the Service Mr. Barrus was trained in radar and electronics. After working for two years in the radar field he was assigned as the clerk for the radar site and worked in that position for two years.
In 1957, he returned to the U. S. Bureau of Mines and worked as a senior lab technician. He was involved in experiments in flocculation, gold and silver recovery, and uranium leaching.
It was during this time that he first started working with computers. The Bureau of Mines was using the University of Utah's Burroughs 205 Datatron and Mr. Barrus was one of four people selected by the Bureau of Mines to attend special classes at the University of Utah to learn to program the computer.
In order to complete the last of his education Mr. Barrus took a position as Assistant Manager of the University of Utah Photo Studio where he filmed everything from the university's football games to open heart surgery.
In 1960 Pacific Northwest Pipeline offered a position as a Computer Programmer, which he eagerly accepted. When Pacific Northwest was purchased by El Paso Natural Gas in 1961 the computer department was moved to Texas so he went to work for Hercules Powder Company as a computer programmer.
At Hercules he worked on programs for the minuteman missile. He wrote the Heat Transfer program, worked on the Solid Fuel Burn Program, and the Spacial Navigation Program. In 1962 North American Aviation in Los Angeles offered a position as Sr. Programmer/Systems Analyst and Mr Barrus moved to Los Angeles where he worked at the main offices, at the International Airport, in Inglewood, California. While at North American he wrote the Stress Analysis Program for the XB-70 aircraft and did some of stress analysis programming on the X-15 Rocket Plane.
Barrus left North American to work with his father in the real estate business. He created and managed the commercial and industrial sales and development arm of the company. Mr. Barrus was instrumental in bringing K-Mart to Utah with their first four stores. He sold many motels and shopping centers.
Because of an aggressive marketing program his clients and acquaintances spread over the United States. He knew real estate managers, and presidents, of many major national companies. He was also active helping his father subdivide several tracts of land in the Salt Lake City area and has been involved in the construction of some 450 homes around Salt Lake.
He was also heavily involved in some major subdivision projects in the greater Los Angeles area. For over two years he worked with Garrick Construction Company helping the company president locate property for subdivisions and managing the construction. At one point there were over 2,500 homes under construction on 11 different tracts.
An opportunity came to work for the Utah State Highway Department as a Senior Systems Analyst. He had taken their examination and received a score of 100% which placed him first on the list. While there he was assigned to accident evaluation. Using his statistical background from College, he evaluated and presented all accident statistics, concerning the County, State and Federal Highway Systems within Utah. The information was submitted to all levels of government. Books were prepared for the general public and detailed reports were furnished to all State Legislators.
Mr. Barrus transferred to Utah Technical College at Salt Lake where he helped establish the data processing course for the school. He taught at the school for two years.
Since leaving the real estate business he had spent many hours of his spare time involved in real estate oriented opportunities. He now decided to spend full time on them.
Instead of real estate transactions a lot of mining properties were presented. With his experience from the Bureau of Mines and his partner's experience as owner and operator of one of the major uranium mines during the big uranium boom, they shifted their emphasis to mining and started buying mining claims.
Mr. Barrus was instrumental in affecting a reverse acquisition merger between EXICO and Otis Oil and Gas Corporation, a publicly traded Colorado corporation. Otis took the assets of EXICO and the EXICO officers assumed management of Otis. Mr. Barrus was the president and chairman of the board of EXICO and assumed the same positions with Otis. Otis had over 10,000 shareholders of record.
Mr. Barrus served as president and chairman of the board of Otis Oil & Gas Corporation for over two years, during which time he was instrumental in acquiring several operating businesses and an oil and gas field in Southern Colorado.
After leaving Otis he organized North American Minerals, Inc. and leased a major uranium property from Atlas Minerals. When the mine was leased there were three miles of underground workings vacated by the previous operator following the close of the uranium boom. Mr Barrus was instrumental in re-opening the mine, providing air and water lines, and new equipment. This was the top mining operation of all of the Atlas leases. Less than four months from the date of the lease the mine was in profitable production. A Colorado group offered to purchase the lease and some adjacent property. Mr. Barrus sold out realizing a good profit.
Mr. Barrus then set up a profitable gold placer operation in California, installing new water lines, pumps, processing equipment and generators. When this operation went into production he accepted an offer from another group selling this property for a good profit.
Mr. Barrus was asked by Transcorp Technology, Inc. to take over the operation of their 500 ton per day ore processing mill and supervise their mining operations. He was told the mill was not operational, and best estimates from the engineers were 3 months of work to get it running. Mr. Barrus had the mill running within 2 weeks. He raised the recovery percentage from just over 50% to over 92%. The mill poured a 200 ounce dore bar each week. Ore came from a mine that was 100 miles away in California.
Transcorp's operations included two iron mines in California that shipped to a cement plant and a gold mine and a tungsten mine in Nevada. Mr. Barrus took the position on a short term basis. Once the mill was producing he left.
Mr. Barrus then established Land Corporation of America, known as Lancor, as a wholly owned subsidiary of National Gold, and became involved in the real estate business once more. He developed Lancor into a large real estate holding company with major properties scattered from Louisiana to California.
Mr. Barrus, as Chief Executive Officer and Chairman of the Board of Directors of Lancor and was responsible for contracting to purchase ll Holiday Inns, 2 Ramada Inns, 2 Emabassy Suites, 1 Hampton House Inn, 2 Howard Johnsons and 3 other nonafilliated motels. A total of over 4,000 rooms. There were also 11 large apartment complexes with over 2,400 units, and oil and gas production facilities, besides large tracts of potential development land in Texas and Florida.
Lancor, using its wholly owned subsidiary corporation, Eagle Technologies, Inc., acquired a 1/3 interest in Calwestern Component Systems, Inc., a component wall manufacturing company located in Fontana, California. Calwestern built over 1,000 homes, apartments, and commercial projects throughout California, Arizona and Nevada during the time Lancor was involved. Lancor sold its interest to the other 2/3 owners.
Mr. Barrus left Lancor to pursue other business interests.
Mr. Barrus organized New Century Homes and is now prepared to enter the Component Wall Manufacturing business again. It is the intent of New Century to address the low income portion of the housing market through manufactured homes and a proprietary low interest mortgage program developed by Lancor.
New Century Homes was acquired by National Gold, Inc. a Utah corporation, and Mr. Barrus is the Chairman of The Board and Chief Executive Officer of National Gold.At that time, Mr. Barrus was also the President and Chairman of the Board of Directors of another National Gold, Inc. This is a publicly held Delaware corporation that has over 10,000 shareholders of record. The plans call for the two companies to be merged and the domicile be moved to Utah.

Bureau of Mines Research Center in Salt Lake City, Utah and twelve years in mining activities for his personal interests as well as for Otis Oil & Gas Corporation, Transcorp Technologies, Inc., National Gold, Inc., and North American Minerals.
